In a resolute statement issued by the Al-Azhar Fatwa Global Center on Sunday, Islam’s unequivocal stance against causing harm to both Muslim and non-Muslim foreigners is underlined, emphasizing society’s responsibility to ensure their safety and protection.
This statement follows a tragic incident in Alexandria on Sunday when an Egyptian policeman fatally shot two Israeli tourists, an Egyptian national, and wounded another Egyptian.
The center’s statement makes a critical distinction within Islam, highlighting the contrast between the right of the oppressed to defend themselves and their homeland and the prohibition of violence against Muahid. Muahid refers to non-Muslims living in a Muslim territory with a valid visa, symbolizing a mutual covenant of security and a guarantee of peace.
It is crucial to clarify this distinction, as some have erroneously linked the Alexandria incident to the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Moreover, the center emphasizes that the Quran strongly condemns all forms of violence against Muahid, encompassing foreign students, ambassadors, and tourists.
In addition to this, the center issues a caution against extremist ideologies that pose a threat to the stability and security of society. It is imperative to reject such ideologies and promote peace, harmony, and coexistence within our communities.
