Awqaf Unveils Restored Heritage Mosque at Old Umm Al-Qahab

The Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs, through its Department of Mosques, has reopened the heritage mosque at Old Umm Al-Qahab following extensive restoration work.

A statement from Awqaf confirmed that the mosque underwent comprehensive renovations overseen by the Maintenance Department within the ministry’s Engineering Affairs sector. This effort was carried out in collaboration with the Architectural Conservation Department at Qatar Museums and funded by the General Administration of Endowments.

The restored mosque, designated as MS 396, features a main prayer hall accommodating up to 34 worshippers. An adjacent courtyard, spanning 120 square meters, provides additional space for another 34 worshippers. The mosque’s iconic minaret stands proudly at the southeastern corner of the structure.

Restoration efforts focused on both the interior and exterior walls, ensuring that the mosque’s original heritage elements were preserved. A new roof was constructed using traditional materials such as wood, bamboo, and mats, maintaining the building’s authentic architectural style. Modern upgrades included thermal and water insulation, as well as a concrete pathway to enhance accessibility for individuals with special needs. The courtyard was also enhanced with small pebbles for an added touch of authenticity.

In keeping with the heritage spirit, the mosque was outfitted with an upgraded electrical network, air conditioning, advanced lighting systems, sound technology, and safety measures.

The Department of Engineering Affairs, responsible for addressing the nation’s mosque-related needs, emphasized the ministry’s commitment to preserving Qatar’s architectural and Islamic heritage. The department also prepares annual maintenance plans for mosques and residences for imams, ensuring the structures meet modern standards while honoring traditional designs.

In its approach to mosque construction, the ministry incorporates population density maps, sustainable building practices, and heritage-preserving aesthetics. The goal is to create spaces that reflect Qatari and Islamic authenticity while meeting the highest engineering and architectural standards.

Additionally, Awqaf’s online platform provides a user-friendly geographic search feature for locating mosques across the country. With precise maps integrated with global navigation systems, worshippers can easily find mosques in any city nationwide.

The reopening of the Old Umm Al-Qahab heritage mosque symbolizes the ministry’s ongoing commitment to preserving Qatar’s rich cultural and religious legacy while serving the needs of modern worshippers.
