Bangladesh Stands in Solidarity with Uyghur Muslims, Calls for Justice

In a resounding display of solidarity and concern, Bangladesh recently bore witness to impassioned protest rallies in Dhaka and Narayanganj, echoing the global outcry against the atrocities faced by Uyghur Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province. This movement, reported by Dhaka Tribune, underscores the urgent demand for justice and an end to the suffering endured by the Uyghur community.

The National Ulema Mashaikh Parishad (NUMP) of Bangladesh orchestrated a powerful protest at the North Gate of the esteemed Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. Meanwhile, in Narayanganj, another demonstration unfolded under the banner of Sachetan Nagrik Samaj, galvanizing a crowd of over 300 protestors. Driven by their shared empathy for the Uyghur Muslims, these demonstrators brandished banners and placards that illuminated the dire plight faced by the Uyghur community.

Prominent figures, including NUMP Chairman Belayet Hossain Al-Firozi, Secretary Mufti Asadullah Zakir, and Advocate Khairul Ahsan, lent their voices to the cause at the Dhaka rally, as detailed by Dhaka Tribune. In their impassioned speeches, they urged the global Muslim community and international powers to raise their voices in unison against the ongoing Chinese atrocities in Xinjiang.

This demonstration follows the United States’ stern condemnation of China’s recent sentencing of Rahile Dawut, a distinguished Uyghur academic, to a life behind bars. Dawut, aged 57, had exhausted all legal avenues, as she lost her appeal against her initial conviction dating back to December 2018, all on charges of “endangering state security.”

Human rights advocates have levied grave accusations against China, asserting that the country is orchestrating a massive internment campaign targeting Uyghurs, characterized by coercive practices such as forced sterilization and cultural suppression. Some prominent institutions, including the U.S. State Department, have even classified these actions as “genocide.”

Contrary to these allegations, China staunchly denies any wrongdoing, as reported by Dhaka Tribune. In response to these developments, Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, issued a statement condemning the unjust imprisonment of Dawut and other Uyghur intellectuals. He emphasized that they were incarcerated solely for their tireless efforts to protect and preserve Uyghur culture and traditions.

It is disheartening to note that Rahile Dawut is just one name on a distressing list of over 300 Uyghur intellectuals who have faced detention, arrest, or imprisonment by Chinese authorities since 2016, as revealed by the U.S.-based Dui Hua Foundation. These actions have sparked a global call for justice, transcending borders and uniting voices in the name of human rights and compassion.
