Mississauga Centre MP Omar Alghabra was appointed as the new minister of transport on Tuesday, January 12, following a cabinet reshuffle by PM Justin Trudeau, Mississauga.com reported.
“I would like to thank the PM @JustinTrudeau for the honour to serve as Canada’s Minister of Transport,” Alghabra wrote on Twitter.
“Over the past 5 yrs, our government has made great strides in building a more efficient, cleaner and safer transportation system, under the leadership of Min @MarcGarneau.”

Alghabra has served as MP for Mississauga Centre since 2015. He is taking the new role following the shuffling of four cabinet ministers announced on Tuesday.
Prior to the cabinet shuffle, Alghabra was minister of intergovernmental affairs and parliamentary secretary to the prime minister (public service renewal) and to the deputy prime minister.
His appointment comes during a period where airlines continue to be hard hit as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Alghabra is the third Canadian Muslim minister in Justin Trudeau’s cabinet.
Ahmed Hussen, MP for York South—Weston, serves as the current Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.
Maryam Monsef, MP for Peterborough—Kawartha, also serves as Minister of Rural Economic Development.
Following a large number of Muslims immigrating to Canada from Muslim-majority countries in the 80’s and 90’s, today Canadian Muslims comprise more than 3.2% of the country’s population.
