East Sussex, UK – Counter-terrorism officers have officially taken control of the investigation into the suspected arson attack at a mosque in Peacehaven, following new evidence that emerged during the inquiry.
Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) confirmed that it is now leading the investigation into the fire incident that occurred at the Peacehaven mosque on 4 October. Authorities say this decision was made “as a result of information and evidence that has come to light,” prompting their involvement in determining whether the attack was motivated by hate or terrorism.

According to officials, the team will “continue to work to establish the motivation behind this offence” while maintaining close coordination with local police and community leaders to ensure public safety.
Two Men Charged, Trial Set for November
Two suspects, Ricky Ryder, 38, of Richington Way, Seaford, and Jack Slowey, 34, of Mayfield Avenue, Peacehaven, have been charged with setting the mosque ablaze. Investigators allege that the men poured a flammable liquid around the building and ignited it while two worshippers were still inside.
Both men are due to stand trial at the Old Bailey on 14 November, where they face serious charges related to arson with intent to endanger life.
Third Arrest in Ongoing Investigation
A 69-year-old man from Newhaven was also arrested on 31 October in connection with the case. Police confirmed that he has since been released on bail until 30 January as inquiries continue.
CTPSE Pledges Swift and Thorough Investigation
Detective Chief Superintendent Claire Finlay, Head of CTPSE, expressed understanding of the community’s concerns, emphasizing the seriousness with which the case is being handled.
“I appreciate the concern an incident of this nature has caused to those living locally,” Finlay said. “We will continue to progress this investigation at pace to ensure all facts are uncovered.”
The police have urged anyone with additional information related to the attack to come forward, assuring that all leads will be thoroughly examined.
