In a significant operation, the Delhi Police Special Cell successfully apprehended a suspected member of the Islamic State (ISIS) and two additional individuals on Monday. The primary suspect, Mohammad Shahnawaz, who also goes by the alias Shafi Ujjama, had been featured prominently on the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) most-wanted list, with a substantial bounty of Rs 3 lakh on his head.
This crucial breakthrough occurred after receiving actionable intelligence concerning an active ISIS module operating within Delhi. The module was allegedly plotting to carry out acts of terrorism in northern India, with Delhi as a potential target, acting upon directives from foreign-based handlers.
Shahnawaz, who holds a professional background in engineering, had been a fugitive in connection with the Pune ISIS module case. Hailing from Delhi, he had managed to evade the authorities after escaping police custody in Pune, ultimately seeking refuge in his hometown before his eventual arrest.
Currently, all three detained individuals, including Shahnawaz, are undergoing intensive questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
During the operation, law enforcement recovered a cache of incriminating materials, including a liquid chemical commonly utilized in the production of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
