“`Eid Al-Fitr Expected May 2”: European Council of Scholars

`Eid Al-Fitr is expected to start on Monday, May 2, according to the European Council For Fatwa and Research (ECFR), citing astronomical calculations.

“The astronomical new moon will be on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 20:28 UT (23:28 Makkah Time),” the Dublin-based council said in an Arabic statement obtained by AboutIslam.net.

The council stated that it would be impossible to see the moon before sundown on Saturday, April 30, either with naked eye or modern equipment in Makkah.

The new moon can be seen on Sunday, May 1st, with naked eye in North America and the southern part of South America, also with telescope in Africa and Asia.

“Hence, the first day of Shawwal is on Monday, May 2, 2022, insha’Allah,” ECFR announced.

On the other hand, the Fiqh Council of North America (FQNA) announced earlier that `Eid Al-Fitr would be marked on May 2.

Marking the end of Ramadan fasting, “Eid Al-Fitr is one the two main Islamic religious festivals along with `Eid Al-Adha.

After special prayers to mark the day, festivities and merriment start with visits to the homes of friends and relatives.

And while traditionally many bask in a joyous mood, wearing new clothes for `Eid, children look forward to gifts and traditional `ediya (cash).
