Eid-El-Kabir Joy: Governor Adeleke Approves Free Lagos-Osun Train Ride for Festive Travelers

In a significant move to ease holiday travels during the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir, the Osun State Government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke has rolled out a five-day free train service for its residents.

The initiative, tailored to assist Osun indigenes residing in Lagos and neighboring states like Ogun and Oyo, is scheduled to run from Thursday, June 5 to Tuesday, June 10, 2025. The train will transport passengers from the Iddo Terminus in Lagos to Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, offering a stress-free travel option for the festive season.

According to details shared by the state government, the outbound journey from Lagos will begin at 10:00 AM on Thursday, June 5, while the return trip from Osogbo back to Lagos is set for Tuesday, June 10 at the same time.

This initiative, described by many as timely and thoughtful, is part of Governor Adeleke’s broader effort to support residents who may face financial challenges during high-demand travel periods.

Continuing a Tradition of Support

This isn’t the first time Osun has provided such a service. The state has consistently offered free train rides during major Muslim celebrations since 2017, making it a long-standing tradition to help ease the transportation burden on its citizens.

In 2024, the government also facilitated similar complimentary trips, enabling hundreds of Osun residents based in Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo States to celebrate Eid with their loved ones back home.

Federal Government’s Transport Relief Efforts

On a broader national level, the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also took measures to reduce transportation stress. During the 2023–2024 festive period, the federal administration provided free train rides nationwide from December 20 to January 5, as announced by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris.

That federal initiative was introduced to cushion the effect of rising travel costs in the wake of the removal of petrol subsidies and to offer some relief to low-income earners during the holidays.

Public Reception

The Osun State free train program has received widespread applause across social media platforms, with many commending Governor Adeleke for maintaining a people-focused approach. Residents praised the government for ensuring that those who may otherwise not afford travel costs can still join family and friends to celebrate Eid.

Conclusion

As the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations approach, Osun State stands out once again with its commitment to community welfare and festive inclusivity. With the free train ride initiative, the state not only promotes unity but also strengthens the bond between its government and citizens.
