Germany Calls for Accountability After Mosque Arson Attack
Germany has sharply criticized an arson attack on a Palestinian mosque allegedly carried out by extremist Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the German Foreign Ministry described the rise in settler attacks as “deeply troubling” and urged Israeli authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Berlin emphasized that the protection of religious sites is an international obligation and warned that continued violence risks further destabilizing an already volatile region.
Details of the Attack in Deir Istiya
Authorities confirmed that the incident took place late Wednesday night in Deir Istiya, a Palestinian town in the central West Bank.
Witnesses reported that a group of settlers set fire to parts of the mosque and vandalized its interior before fleeing the area.

Local residents managed to contain the flames, but the attack caused significant damage and heightened tensions in the community.
It is the latest in a series of assaults targeting Palestinian religious sites and private properties throughout 2024 and 2025.
Escalating Violence Across the West Bank
Violence in the West Bank has intensified since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
According to Palestinian officials, more than 1,070 Palestinians have been killed and over 10,300 injured during clashes involving both settlers and Israeli forces.
Human rights groups and UN monitors have documented hundreds of settler-related incidents, including arson, destruction of farmland, vandalism, and physical attacks.
Many of these incidents reportedly occurred in the presence of Israeli security forces, with rights groups claiming limited or delayed intervention.
Germany’s statement mirrors growing global concern as governments and international organizations call for stronger measures to protect civilians under occupation.
International Legal and Diplomatic Backdrop
Germany’s condemnation comes at a time when Israel’s settlement policies are under renewed scrutiny.
In July 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued a landmark advisory opinion declaring Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza to be in violation of international law.
The court called for:
-
The withdrawal of all Israeli settlements from occupied territories
-
The immediate halt of demographic and territorial alterations
-
Strengthened protection for Palestinian civilians
The ICJ opinion has intensified diplomatic pressure on Israel, with several countries urging compliance with international law and accountability for settler-related violence.
Germany Urges De-escalation
Germany reiterated its long-standing position that preserving stability and protecting civilians must remain a priority for all parties.
Berlin called for restraint, stressing that continued settler violence undermines regional peace efforts and poses serious risks to the future of a negotiated two-state solution.
