How to Cleanse Urine Excrement in Islam and Its Verses

Urine is included as Najis (excrement) in Islam. As a belief that is deemed to be perfect, Islam has rules regarding how we cleanse this type of najis.

However, In Islam, the way we deal with urine has differences. To cleanse urine, first, we have to know what type of urine that will be cleansed off then apply the written procedure to cleanse it accordingly.

If you are curious about how to cleanse urine excrement in Islam and its verses, read below!

A baby’s urine

If the urine that we want to cleanse came from a baby boy, still breastfed and has not consumed any solid food, then it is enough to sprinkle it with clean water to cleanse it,

From Abu Sambi- a slave of The Prophet narrated:

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “The urine of a baby girl should be washed off and the urine of baby boy should be sprinkled (with water)”. [Reported by Abu Da’ud and An-Nasa’i and Al-Hakim graded it Sahih (sound)].

Narrated by Umm Qais bint Mihsan: “I came to the Messenger of Allah with a son of mine who was not yet eating solid food, and he (the baby) urinated on him. He called for water and sprinkled it over (the urine).” (Ibn Majah, 524)

However, if the urine that is cleansed came from a baby girl or a baby boy who eats solid food, then it has to be cleansed by washing the cloth, as to how done to an adult.

Narrated by Abu Huraira (rad):

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said: “Beware of (smearing yourselves with) urine because it is the main cause of punishment in the grave”. [Reported by Ad-Daraqutni]

Urine on the floor

If the urine is spotted on the floor, then it is enough to cleanse it by watering the floor with clean water. Because a floor is not something that absorbs. This once happened to The Messenger of Allah when a bedouin peed on the mosque’s floor:

The Prophet (ﷺ) ordered them to leave him and to pour a bucket or a tumbler of water over the place where he had passed the urine. The Prophet (ﷺ) then said, “You have been sent to make things easy and not to make them difficult.” (Bukhari 220)

However, if the floor that is stained by najis is the floor of a house of a small room, then it will be harder to water over the floor since the things around the spot will be we, too, So, it is advised to use a dry cloth first to absorbs the urine. Then, proceed to mop the floor. Scrub until the smell is gone. Therefore, the najis will not stain anywhere else that is clean.

Urine on bed

Then, what if it is the bed that got stained by urine? It will be harder to cleanse, moreover when the bed is made of cotton and big. Therefore the way to cleanse is by cleaning the part that has been stained only. If the bed got stained by urine, then you only need to wipe the part with a wet cloth until the color and smell of urine are gone.

“If there is found soil that has been stained by urine then dried, pour water onto it, then the soil has been purified though not absorbed in, whether the soil is hard or soft.” (Ibn Hazam, 2004)

Urine of dogs

If the urine that needs to be cleansed is produced by a haram animal such as a dog or a pig, then the way to cleanse it is different, too. This type of najis has to be cleansed by rinsing the stained spot with water as many as seven times or once with soil or dust.

The Prophet said,

“The purification of the utensil belonging to anyone of you, after it is licked by a dog, lies in washing it seven times, using sand for the first time.” (Hadith Muslim, 279)

Those are the tips on how to cleanse urine excrement and its verses. Wishing this article has broadened our knowledge of fiqh in Islam. Aamiin.
