Prayer (Salah) in Islam is the backbone of the faith, connecting believers directly with Allah (SWT). Among these prayers, Witr (the odd-numbered prayer) holds a special place, particularly in the hearts of those who seek closeness to Allah. In this blog post, we will explore the profound significance of Witr prayer, its importance in the life of a Muslim, and provide a detailed guide on how to perform it correctly.

Understanding the Importance of Witr Prayer

What is Witr Prayer?

The word “Witr” means “odd” in Arabic, and this prayer is named so because it is offered in an odd number of rak’ahs (units of prayer). Witr prayer is highly emphasized in Islamic teachings and is considered one of the most virtuous voluntary prayers. It is a part of the Sunnah Mu’akkadah (highly recommended acts) and holds a distinct place in the nightly worship routine of a Muslim.

The Spiritual Significance

Witr prayer is performed during the Isha prayer (the night prayer) and before the Fajr prayer (the dawn prayer). It serves as a spiritual closure to the day, a way to seek forgiveness, express gratitude, and strengthen one’s connection with Allah. It is a moment of tranquility and reflection, offering a peaceful end to the day’s spiritual journey.

The Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) Emphasis on Witr

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) placed great importance on the Witr prayer. He said, “The Witr is a duty for every Muslim, so whoever likes to pray five rak’ahs, let him do so, and whoever likes to pray three, let him do so, and whoever likes to pray one, let him do so” (Sunan Abu Dawood). This Hadith underscores the flexibility and significance of this prayer, making it accessible to every believer regardless of their circumstances.

The Rewards of Witr Prayer

The rewards associated with Witr prayer are immense. It is said that the one who consistently performs Witr will have their sins forgiven, their supplications answered, and their faith strengthened. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Allah is Witr (One), and He loves Witr, so perform Witr prayer” (Sahih Muslim). This statement reflects the special status of Witr prayer and its ability to draw a Muslim closer to the Divine.

1. Intention (Niyyah)

Before starting the prayer, make a sincere intention in your heart to perform the Witr prayer. The intention can be made in your own words, acknowledging that you are about to perform Witr prayer for the sake of Allah.

2. Starting the Prayer
  • Takbir: Raise your hands to your ears (for men) or shoulders (for women) and say “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest).
  • Qiyam: Stand straight and recite Surah Al-Fatihah, followed by another Surah or verses from the Quran.
3. First Rak’ah
  • After reciting Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah, perform the bowing position (Ruku) saying “Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem” (Glory is to my Lord, the Most Great) three times.
  • Stand up straight, saying “Sami’ Allahu liman hamidah” (Allah hears those who praise Him) and then “Rabbana wa lakal hamd” (Our Lord, to You is due all praise).
  • Go into the prostration position (Sujood) saying “Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” (Glory is to my Lord, the Most High) three times.
  • Sit briefly, then perform a second prostration in the same manner.
4. Second Rak’ah
  • Stand up for the second rak’ah and repeat the same actions: recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another Surah, perform Ruku, stand up, and perform the two prostrations.
5. Third Rak’ah
  • Stand up for the third rak’ah and recite Surah Al-Fatihah.
  • After reciting Surah Al-Fatihah, it is recommended to recite Surah Al-Ikhlas (Chapter 112), Surah Al-Falaq (Chapter 113), and Surah An-Nas (Chapter 114).
  • After the recitation, raise your hands and make a supplication known as the Qunoot. The Qunoot is a special supplication made during Witr, and it can be in Arabic or your own language. A commonly recited Qunoot is:
  • “Allahumma ihdini fiman hadayta, wa ‘afini fiman ‘afayta, wa tawallani fiman tawallayta, wa barik li fima a’tayta, wa qini sharra ma qadayta, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda ‘alayka, innahu la yadhillu man walayta, wa la ya’izzu man ‘adayta, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta’alayta, wa laka al-hamdu ‘ala ma qadayta, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayka”
  • (O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, and grant me health among those You have granted health, and take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care, and bless me in what You have given me, and protect me from the evil You have decreed, for You decree and none can influence You, and he is not humiliated whom You have befriended, nor is he honored whom You have opposed. Blessed are You, O Lord, and Exalted. To You belongs all praise for what You have decreed. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You).
6. Completion of the Prayer
  • After the Qunoot, continue with Ruku and Sujood as in the previous rak’ahs.
  • Sit for the final Tashahhud: “At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibatu. As-salamu ‘alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu ‘alayna wa ‘ala ‘ibadillahis-salihin. Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh” (All compliments, prayers, and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger).
  • End the prayer by turning your head to the right and saying “As-salamu ‘alaykum wa rahmatullah” (Peace and mercy of Allah be upon you), and then to the left.

Variations and Flexibility in Witr Prayer

Different Numbers of Rak’ahs

While three rak’ahs are common, Witr can be performed in one, five, seven, nine, or eleven rak’ahs. If you choose to perform more than three rak’ahs, it is recommended to pray in sets of two rak’ahs, ending with a single rak’ah for Witr. For example, if praying five rak’ahs, pray four rak’ahs (two sets of two) and then finish with one rak’ah for Witr.
