An imam in East London was violently assaulted by a man who reportedly entered the mosque under the pretense of wanting to pray.

In response to this alarming incident, security measures have been significantly heightened at the Al Karam Mosque in Newham. Police have committed to maintaining a high visibility presence following the attack, which occurred in the early hours of July 22.

Around 5:30 am, the assailant allegedly entered the mosque with a concealed lock knife, claiming his intention was to pray. Once inside, he launched a violent attack on Imam Mansoor Mahmood.

A spokesperson for the Al Karam Mosque stated, “Our Imam showed remarkable bravery by defending himself until the police arrived and apprehended the attacker. We are profoundly grateful that our Imam survived this horrific incident and commend the swift response of the police. We urge our congregation to support and adhere to the enhanced security measures, including regulated opening and closing of the mosque during prayer times.”

Chief Inspector Sarah Jackson, who oversees Newham’s neighborhood policing teams, noted that local faith officers had been dispatched to the mosque. “This is a very concerning incident, and we are treating it with the utmost seriousness. Local faith officers have met with those directly impacted, and we are working with other partners to provide wider reassurance. Officers will maintain a high visibility presence at the mosque during Friday prayers, and I encourage anyone with concerns to speak to them.”

Police were called to the mosque on Katherine Road, E7, at approximately 5:30 am on Monday, July 22, following reports of the assault. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. The incident is being treated as an isolated event and not as a hate crime.

Motin Jaman, 32, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and assault by beating. He is scheduled to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
