Sheikh Abdul Malik Haqqani, Deputy of the Supreme Court of Afghanistan, announced on Monday that the Islamic Emirate is fully prepared to facilitate the return of Afghan prisoners from Iran. During a meeting with Iran’s Minister of Justice, both parties deliberated on enhancing judicial cooperation, reconsidering the death penalties of Afghan prisoners, and addressing banking challenges faced by Afghan migrants in various Iranian cities, according to a statement released by the court.
The Islamic Emirate delegation called on Iranian authorities to expedite the process of transferring Afghan prisoners after verifying their identities. In another meeting with Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, the delegation proposed alternatives to capital punishment for Afghans detained in Iran.
Additionally, the Afghan representatives underscored the need to create educational and employment opportunities for Afghan nationals residing in Iran while urging Iranian officials to prevent harassment and unlawful detention of Afghan migrants.
Kazem Gharibabadi affirmed Iran’s commitment to transferring 1,500 Afghan prisoners to Afghanistan soon, according to the court’s statement. Meanwhile, Iranian human rights organizations have reported that 90 Afghan nationals have been executed in Iran over the past three years.
