Katsina Government Summons Islamic Cleric Over Controversial Preaching Activities

The Katsina State Government has summoned a popular Islamic cleric, Mallam Yahaya Masussuka, following a series of reports alleging that his teachings and preaching sessions may have breached the established principles guiding Islamic religious conduct in the state.

The directive was announced in Katsina by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abdullahi Faskari, through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Almu-Gafai, on Tuesday.

Concerns Raised Over Alleged Violations

According to the statement, authorities received multiple complaints indicating that Masussuka’s sermons were not in line with the general standards of Islamic jurisprudence traditionally upheld in the state.

The SSG also revealed that the cleric, on his part, submitted a petition alleging that certain members of the Jama’atu Izalatul Bidia group had been insulting and issuing threats against him due to differences in doctrinal interpretations.

Matter Referred to Katsina Emirate Council

In an effort to address the growing tension, the government referred both parties to the Katsina Emirate Council for mediation. The Emir, Alhaji Abdulmuminu Kabir-Usman, presided over the meeting and cautioned all involved to ensure their teachings and religious engagements do not provoke, insult, or infringe on the rights of others.

The Emir emphasized that mutual respect remains essential in maintaining peace among scholars and followers of different Islamic schools of thought.

Cleric to Face Committee of Ulamas

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has directed that Masussuka appear before a Committee of Ulamas to formally defend himself against the allegations.

The SSG added that the committee will subsequently establish clear standards, rules, and guidelines for Islamic preaching in the state. He warned that any individual who violates these rules will face appropriate government action.

Government Calls for Calm

Faskari urged residents to remain calm and allow the government and religious authorities to handle the matter diligently.

He assured the public that the situation is being treated with utmost fairness, noting that stakeholders are working to prevent escalation and ensure harmony within the Muslim community.
