Major Fire Destroys Mosque and Over 35 Houses in Kishtwar District

A devastating fire broke out in the remote village of Mulwarwan, located in the Marwah area of Kishtwar district, on Monday, gutting over 35 houses and a mosque, according to local officials.

The fire, which spread rapidly through the wooden structures, caused significant damage but no casualties have been reported. Senior police officials confirmed that teams were dispatched to the scene immediately after the fire was reported.

Kishtwar Deputy Magistrate Rajesh Kumar Shavan said that firefighting operations were launched promptly. We are actively working to control the fire. Fortunately, there have been no casualties so far,” he stated.

Shavan also mentioned that relief measures are being implemented to assist the families affected by the fire. The district administration is coordinating efforts to provide necessary assistance, including temporary shelters, clothing, and food supplies. We are doing everything possible to support the affected people,” he added.

Cause of the Fire Still Under Investigation

While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, officials noted that residents in remote, hilly areas often use charcoal in earthen pots to heat their homes, which could be a potential factor. The wooden houses in Marwah and Dachhan areas are particularly vulnerable to fire due to their construction materials.

Authorities from Anantnag district have also dispatched additional firefighting personnel to assist in controlling the blaze. Mulwarwan is situated about 105 kilometers from Anantnag via Margan Top, and 170 kilometers from Kishtwar via Sinthan Top.

Local Mosque Among the Structures Destroyed

The Jamia Masjid, a significant place of worship in the village, was completely destroyed in the fire. The imam of the mosque described the situation as “critical,” noting that over 40 houses had been engulfed by the flames.

The people here are in desperate need of assistance. I urge the administration and generous individuals to contribute woollen clothes, blankets, and food for those who have lost their homes,” the imam pleaded.

As efforts continue to contain the fire and support the affected families, the community is rallying to provide relief to those left homeless by this tragic incident.
