The accused, Bill Tan Keng Hwee, is facing one count of deliberately intending to wound the racial and religious feelings of others. According to court records, the envelope, discovered before Wednesday (Sep 27), contained a piece of pork along with a note that was left in view of a Malay man.
Tan was arrested on Thursday, a day after the incident came to light. He has been remanded, with permission granted for him to be taken out to assist with ongoing investigations. His case has been adjourned to Oct 3.

If convicted, he could face up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both under Singapore’s laws against actions intended to inflame racial or religious tensions.
Incident Prompted Safety Response
Authorities reported that the suspicious parcel triggered precautionary measures at the mosque. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) deployed its hazardous materials specialists, and the area was temporarily evacuated. One person was assessed for breathlessness and later taken to Sengkang General Hospital.
Possible Links to Other Cases
Police have stated that preliminary investigations suggest the suspect may be connected to similar incidents targeting other mosques across Singapore. These investigations remain ongoing.
Official Response
Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, visited Al-Istiqamah Mosque on Wednesday night. Speaking to the media, he emphasized that incidents of this nature are “completely unacceptable” and reassured the community that authorities are treating the matter with utmost seriousness.
