Syria entered the year 2026 under the shadow of uncertainty, but one act of courage has captured the nation’s attention. Mohamed Massat, a Muslim police officer stationed in Aleppo, was killed on New Year’s Eve after stopping a planned terrorist attack aimed at Christian worshippers.
Massat, who had welcomed his first child—a baby girl—only ten days earlier, is now being remembered across Syria as a national hero. His actions prevented what authorities say could have been a devastating attack during a major Christian celebration.
Deadly Encounter at Aleppo Security Checkpoint
The incident occurred at a security checkpoint in the Bab al-Faraj district of Aleppo, a busy area near places of worship and public gatherings. According to security sources, Officer Massat became suspicious of a man approaching the checkpoint and attempted to verify his identity.
The suspect, later confirmed to be a member of ISIS (Daesh), opened fire without warning, killing Massat on the spot. Moments later, the attacker detonated an explosive device, injuring two other police officers who were assisting in the arrest.
The swift response by security forces prevented the attacker from reaching his intended target.
Authorities Confirm Planned Church Attacks
The Syrian Ministry of Interior released an official statement offering condolences to Massat’s family and confirming that the attack was part of a broader terror plot.

According to the Ministry, intelligence operations had uncovered plans by ISIS cells to carry out suicide bombings during New Year celebrations in multiple provinces, with a particular focus on Aleppo. Churches and areas where civilians were expected to gather were identified as primary targets.
The Ministry praised the vigilance of security personnel and reaffirmed its commitment to combating terrorism across the country.
A Symbol of Unity in a Divided Time
Massat’s funeral drew a large crowd, with mourners from different religious and ethnic backgrounds attending to pay their respects. Many described his sacrifice as a powerful reminder of Aleppo’s long-standing tradition of coexistence between Muslims and Christians.
Community leaders emphasized that his actions transcended religious identity, representing a shared stand against violence and extremism.
Attack Foiled Months After Damascus Church Tragedy
The attempted bombing comes just six months after a deadly attack on the Mar Elias Church in Damascus, where more than 20 people were killed in June. The timing of the planned Aleppo attack—on New Year’s Eve—raised fears of renewed sectarian violence.
Massat’s intervention ensured that history did not repeat itself.
Remembering Mohamed Massat
For many Syrians, Mohamed Massat is more than a fallen officer. He is being remembered as a husband, a new father, and a man who gave his life to protect innocent people of another faith.
Social media platforms across Syria have been filled with tributes praising his bravery, with many calling him a symbol of hope at a time when unity is desperately needed.
