A planning application has been lodged to develop a new mosque building in Glasgow’s southside.
Masjid Noor, located on Forth Street in Pollokshields, intends to construct a modern facility next to its current site. Community representatives say the existing premises are no longer sufficient to accommodate the growing congregation.
Proposed Features of the New Mosque
According to submitted documents, the new mosque will be a two-storey structure with additional parking facilities.
The development will also feature:
-
A basement, ground floor, and first-floor layout.
-
A new entrance area, prayer hall, and sanitary facilities.
-
Dedicated space to separate worship areas from community activity areas.
-
Bicycle stands to promote sustainable travel.
The materials used in construction have been designed to reflect and respect the character of the surrounding neighborhood.

Current Role of Masjid Noor
At present, Masjid Noor serves as a hub for both religious and community activities. The mosque hosts:
-
Daily congregational prayers
-
Islamic study classes for children, women, and men
-
A range of community support programs
The proposed expansion will allow these services to grow while also providing improved facilities for worshippers.
Next Steps in the Approval Process
The application will now be reviewed by Glasgow City Council in the coming weeks. If approved, the new building will become a landmark development for the Muslim community in Glasgow’s southside.
