Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has stated that the country’s participation in the upcoming Joint Arab-Islamic Summit reflects both its close geographic ties and deep-rooted connections with the Middle East. The summit is set to commence on Monday, 11 November 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
During the summit, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu will address the Israel-Palestine crisis, reiterating Nigeria’s urgent call for a ceasefire and the pursuit of a diplomatic solution. “The Nigerian government believes that this conflict cannot be resolved militarily,” Mr. Idris emphasized, highlighting the nation’s commitment to fostering peaceful resolutions through diplomatic channels.
Mr. Idris further clarified Nigeria’s stance, underscoring that its active involvement in the summit demonstrates Nigeria’s dedication to global peace efforts and its influence as a voice advocating for resolution in the Israel-Palestine conflict. He pointed out that only a “two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine coexisting peacefully within secure borders, can provide the path to lasting peace.”

With the recent escalation beginning on 7 October 2023, when Hamas launched an attack on Israel, the conflict has intensified significantly. Thousands have since lost their lives, including a high number of women and children, as the situation in Gaza worsens. Israel has maintained its siege on Gaza, aiming to neutralize Hamas despite international calls for an immediate ceasefire.
The humanitarian crisis has become severe, with reports warning that Gaza faces imminent famine and that ongoing hostilities could drive over a million people toward critical food insecurity. Mr. Idris highlighted Nigeria’s concerns, noting, “Peace in the Middle East is critical not only for the region but for the entire world. A diplomatic solution is essential to prevent the conflict from further destabilizing surrounding regions.”
