There Is No Compulsion In Religion
Religion coercion is alien to Islam. The Qur'an and Sunna openly prohibit this.
No one can force Islam to be accepted – such is one of the fundamental truths in religion. The tasks of a Muslim are to provide all the necessary proof of the correctness of Islam so that a person can distinguish truth from lies. Next, accept Islam or remain a supporter of unbelief, everyone decides for himself. In case of refusal of intimidation or harm, there can be no question. Among the brightest indications of this are the following verses of the Holy Quran. Lord says:
“There is no compulsion in religion. The direct path is already distinguished from delusion. He who does not believe in idolatry, but believes in Allah, has seized upon the most reliable handle that will never break. Allah is Hearer, Knower ”(Quran 2: 256).
“If your Lord would have wished, then everyone on earth would believe. Would you force people to turn to believers? ”(Quran 10:99)
“If they begin to spar with you, say:“ I submitted my face to Allah together with those who followed me. ” Tell those who have been given the Scriptures, as well as uneducated people: “Have you converted to Islam?” If they convert to Islam, they will follow a direct path. If they turn away, then only the transfer of the revelation is entrusted to you. Allah Sees servants ”(Quran 3:20)
“The Prophet is not entrusted with anything except the transmission of revelation” (Quran 5:99)
The last two verses were revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in Medina. This is important because the indications in them did not only apply to Muslims when they were helpless in Mecca.

Many may ask: If this is the approach of Islam, what is the purpose of Jihad? How can one explain the war that the Prophet Muhammad, (SAW) against the pagans? The fact is that there are several reasons for Jihad, but there is no compulsory conversion to Islam. The appeal to Islam should be conducted peacefully, exhorting in words, but by no means a weapon.
In a letter to the Roman emperor Heraclius, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), wrote:
“I urge you to accept Islam. by accepting Islam you will find safety, so that the Most High Allah doubly bestows good on you. But if you do not accept Islam, you will incur the sins and offences of all your people ”(Sahih Al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim).
A Muslim should bring the message in such a way as to dispel all doubts about the truth of Islam and bring all the necessary evidence for this. Then his mission is complete. Those who wish to accept Islam are free to do so, those who do not wish are also free to do what they want.
When Muslims fight and possibly seize land, their duty is to establish the laws of the Most High in this land and ensure security and justice for all its inhabitants – Muslims and non-Muslims. Again, Muslims cannot be forced to accept Islam. Even under Muslim rule, non-Muslims, if they wish, can adhere to their faith and openly perform all the necessary rites. However, they must honour the laws of their state.

If the goal of Jihad was to force non-believers to convert to Islam, the Prophet would never order to refrain from hostility if the enemy surrendered. He would not forbid killing women and children. But that’s exactly what he did.
In one of the military campaigns, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW), noticed the assembled people. When it turned out that they had gathered around the murdered woman, he said:
“She shouldn’t have been killed!” The troops were commanded by Khalid ibn Walid, and the Prophet ordered to tell him: “Tell Khalid not to kill women and slaves” (Sunna Abu Daud).
So, even in the midst of the battle against the enemy, Islam forbids killing those who do not take part in the battle.

If Jihad were to be forced to accept Islam, the righteous caliphs would not forbid the attempt on the lives of priests and monks who are not participating in the battle. But it was just that. Having sent an army to Syria to fight against aggressive Roman legionnaires, the first caliph Abu Bakr said: “You will meet people who have dedicated themselves to serving God (the monks), let them continue to do their work.”
