As Ondo State approaches its November 16 governorship election, the local Muslim community has voiced its support for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a recent gathering held in Akure, community leaders reaffirmed their commitment to backing Aiyedatiwa, emphasizing their active role in the upcoming election.
During the meeting, Alhaji Ahmad Aladesawe, Chairman of the League of Imams and Alfas in Ondo, led prayers for a peaceful electoral process. The Baba Adinni of Owo Kingdom, Chief Jamiu Ekungba, expressed confidence in Aiyedatiwa, comparing the community’s current resolve to its unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu, which contributed to his victory.
“As we supported President Tinubu in his campaign, we are ready to show the same commitment to Governor Aiyedatiwa,” Ekungba said. “The Muslim community stands united behind him, challenging the misconception that Muslims shy away from political participation.”

The Grand Mufti of Ondo State, Alhaji Surajudeen Batuta, highlighted his belief that Aiyedatiwa’s leadership is divinely guided, and predicted a peaceful election. “God has chosen Governor Aiyedatiwa to lead in these times,” he said. “With his inclusion of Muslims in political offices, he will witness positive outcomes and a unity that benefits the state.”
In response, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed his gratitude for the community’s support and reassured them of his commitment to an inclusive administration. He promised fair treatment for all religious groups if re-elected, underscoring his vision for equal rights and representation for all citizens.
Meanwhile, the PROMAD Infotech Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has encouraged the people of Ondo State to overcome voter apathy and fully participate in the election. Addressing recent low turnout in state elections, the foundation held a civic engagement meeting in Akure, where Mr. Banjo Ayenakin, a board trustee, stressed the need for heightened voter involvement. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that all registered voters exercise their rights, referencing data from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that over two million people are registered for the upcoming vote.
“This is a significant number, yet historical turnout has remained low in past election cycles,” Ayenakin noted. “Mobilizing registered voters is a collective task, and it’s critical to have active engagement from every citizen to ensure a credible election outcome.”
Through a focused campaign on civic participation, the PROMAD Infotech Foundation aims to counteract election apathy and foster a higher voter turnout, contributing to a more representative and fair election on November 16.
