One in Three British Muslims Consider Leaving the UK Amid Rising Islamophobia: Report

A recent report by Tell MAMA, a UK-based anti-Muslim hate crime monitoring group, reveals alarming findings about the growing concerns of British Muslims. One in three British Muslims is contemplating leaving the UK due to the rise in Islamophobia, particularly following the violent riots this summer triggered by misinformation about the Southport stabbings.

Widespread Islamophobia Following Southport Incident

The survey conducted by Tell MAMA paints a troubling picture. After the mass stabbing on July 30 in Southport, where false claims circulated online alleging a Muslim asylum seeker was responsible, a wave of riots broke out across the country. The violence targeted immigrants and Muslims, deepening fear and mistrust within these communities.

One in four survey respondents reported experiencing Islamophobia directly—either online or in person—since the incident. Additionally, two-thirds of those surveyed believe that the risk to Muslim communities has significantly increased in the wake of the riots.

Mosques and Community Safety at Risk

The findings also reveal that nearly 40% of respondents fear that their local mosques are vulnerable to attacks from far-right extremists. Despite the hostility, some British Muslims are demonstrating resilience. Half of the participants stated that the riots had inspired them to become “more open” about their Muslim identity, and six in ten affirmed they still feel safe in the UK.

However, these numbers contrast sharply with the growing anxiety and calls for stronger government action.

Call for Action

Iman Atta, director of Tell MAMA, expressed deep concern over the survey’s findings, describing them as a “wake-up call” for policymakers.

“Many British Muslims are very scared at the moment,” Atta said in a statement. “They need the government to show it hears their fears and is committed to keeping them safe.”

Tell MAMA reported receiving numerous complaints from individuals who experienced threats, verbal abuse, or even physical assaults in the weeks following the riots.

“More work must be done to reassure Muslim communities. Social cohesion must be a priority in the areas worst affected by far-right violence,” Atta added.

Rising Hate Crimes

The report aligns with findings from the Runnymede Trust, which also highlighted a surge in Islamophobic hate crimes across the UK. The trust’s research indicated that hate-filled rhetoric portraying Muslims as a threat to British society has become increasingly mainstream.

National Response to Islamophobia

Coinciding with the release of Tell MAMA’s report, British MP Afzal Khan, alongside Amnesty International and the Muslim Council of Britain, took part in an event in Parliament to mark Islamophobia Awareness Month. This annual initiative aims to shed light on the positive contributions of Muslims to British society while raising awareness about the discrimination they face.

Khan underscored the urgency of addressing Islamophobia, saying:
“With the surge in Islamophobic hate crimes since October 2023 and the far-right rioters attacking mosques and Muslim communities this summer, it’s more important than ever for MPs to stand united with British Muslims and commit to eradicating Islamophobia.”

A Wake-Up Call for Action

The findings serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by British Muslims in an increasingly polarized environment. Both Tell MAMA and other advocacy groups have called for more robust measures to combat hate crimes, foster social cohesion, and ensure the safety of minority communities in the UK.

While many Muslims continue to persevere and openly embrace their faith, the growing threat of Islamophobia underscores the urgent need for action to promote inclusivity and counter hate.
