A tragic incident unfolded in Niger State, Nigeria, over the weekend when a woman accused of blasphemy against Islam was brutally killed by a mob.
According to a statement released on Monday by Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, the victim, identified as Amaye, a food vendor from Katsina State, was set ablaze on Saturday following allegations that she made offensive remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Abiodun strongly condemned the act, describing it as a case of “jungle justice.” He emphasized that such actions are unlawful and called on the public to remain calm while security operatives continue their search for the perpetrators.
Nigeria practices a dual legal system where Sharia law operates alongside common law in 12 predominantly Muslim states, including Niger. Under Sharia law, blasphemy is punishable by death. However, in many instances, suspects never make it to trial, as mobs often take matters into their own hands.
The killing in Niger State echoes past cases of mob violence linked to blasphemy allegations. In June 2023, a butcher in Sokoto was stoned to death following similar accusations. A year earlier, a Christian college student in Sokoto was also lynched by fellow students over alleged blasphemous remarks.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid self-help and allow justice to take its proper course. The police have reassured the public of their commitment to bringing those responsible for the killing to justice.
