[Q-ID0790] Will my Fast break if I swallow my own saliva?

QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: will swallowing one’s saliva invalidate the fast?

بسم اللہ الرحمن الرحیم
الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

No, swallowing one’s own saliva will not invalidate the fast. It is stated in Fatāwā Hindiyyah:

تَرَطَّبَتْ شَفَتَيْهِ بِبُزَاقِهِ عِنْدَ الْكَلَامِ ۔۔ فَابْتَلَعَهُ لَا يَفْسُدُ لِلضَّرُورَةِ كَذَا فِي الزَّاهِدِيِّ وَلَوْ سَالَ لُعَابُهُ مِنْ فِيهِ إلَى ذَقَنِهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَنْ يَنْقَطِعَ مِنْ دَاخِلِ فَمِهِ ثُمَّ رَدَّهُ إلَى فِيهِ وَابْتَلَعَهُ لَا يُفْطِرُهُ

‘If the lips became wet with his saliva whilst he was talking, and he swallowed it, then the fast is not void, due to necessity. Likewise, if saliva came out of his mouth and flowed towards his chin such that it had not yet separated from the inside of his mouth, and then he sucked it back in and swallowed it, the fast is not invalid.’
