Rumor Scanner Debunks Viral Video Misrepresenting Muslim Chairman’s Murder as Hindu Killing

Fact-checking organization Rumor Scanner has uncovered the truth behind a video falsely circulating in India since August, claiming the murder of a Hindu elderly man in Bangladesh. The investigation revealed that the video actually depicts the political murder of a Muslim chairman named Shahidul Islam Hiron in Jhenaidah, Bangladesh.

According to a report published on Rumor Scanner’s website on Monday, two videos have been widely shared on social media platforms. These videos misleadingly allege that a Hindu man was brutally beaten to death by Muslims and later hung from a statue.

However, thorough analysis by the Rumor Scanner team confirmed that the man shown in the videos was Shahidul Islam Hiron, the former chairman of Porahati Union in Jhenaidah. Hiron was beaten to death and his body was hung from a statue in Payra Chattar, Jhenaidah, in August.

The investigation traced two videos posted on August 5 from social media accounts named Rukon Shehabi Rukon and RJ Moon. Both posts identified the victim as Chairman Hiron from Jhenaidah, aligning with the details uncovered.

Further keyword searches and name-based inquiries led to a report titled “The Controversial Hiron Chairman Could Not Survive Even After Opening Fire” published by Dhaka Post on August 5. The report detailed that on the same day, following the fall of the Awami League government, Hiron, who was also the General Secretary of Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila Awami League, and his driver Akhter Hossain, were attacked by a mob. The two were brutally hacked, set on fire, and killed. Hiron’s body was then transported to Payra Chattar in the city center, where it was hung.

Additional confirmation came from a Kalbela newspaper report published on the same day. The report disclosed that protesters, enraged by the political situation, stormed Hiron’s home, leading to gunfire that injured several people. Later, the house was set ablaze, resulting in the deaths of Hiron and four others.

To validate the location, Rumor Scanner compared the structures visible in the videos to images of Payra Chattar obtained from Google Maps. The analysis confirmed a perfect match, proving that the events indeed occurred at Payra Chattar in Jhenaidah.

This investigation conclusively debunks the false narrative circulating in India. The video, which depicts the political killing of Muslim Chairman Shahidul Islam Hiron, is being misrepresented as the murder of a Hindu man in Bangladesh. Such claims are entirely baseless and misleading.
