Saudi Arabia Braces for Intense Cold Snap as Temperatures Plummet Below Freezing

Frost, Strong Winds, and Fog Expected as Cold Front Sweeps Across the Kingdom

Saudi Arabia is set to experience a significant cold wave starting today (Monday), with temperatures forecasted to drop below freezing in several northern and central regions.

According to the Saudi Weather and Climate Association, the cold front will extend across northern and northeastern Saudi Arabia, reaching parts of the central region from Monday through Wednesday.

Meteorologists warn that early morning temperatures in the northern areas may dip below zero degrees Celsius, while central Saudi Arabia could see temperatures ranging between zero and four degrees. These frigid conditions are expected to cause frost formation and the freezing of water sources, especially in remote areas.

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) has issued warnings about a sharp temperature drop across northern Saudi Arabia, with frost and dense fog anticipated overnight and in the early morning hours.

Strong surface winds, capable of raising dust and sand, are expected to impact several regions, including Tabuk, Medina, Mecca’s coastal areas, the Eastern Province, Riyadh, and Najran. The effects of these winds may also extend to the highlands of Asir and Al Baha.

Climatologists have identified this cold spell as “Bard Al Ajooz” (the Old Woman’s Cold), a well-documented late-season cold front that typically precedes the arrival of spring.

Regional Impact and Peak Temperatures

Dr. Abdullah Al Misnad, a climate expert, noted that the cold front began advancing into northern Saudi Arabia on Friday and is expected to expand southward, eastward, and westward, reaching Riyadh by Sunday.

“The intensity of the cold wave will vary by region,” Al Misnad explained on X (formerly Twitter). “It will hit the north hardest on Monday and Tuesday, move into central areas on Tuesday and Wednesday, and reach peak intensity in Medina on Tuesday. The Eastern Province and Najran are likely to experience the coldest temperatures by Wednesday.”

While the southwestern regions of the Kingdom are expected to be less affected by the cold snap, the northern parts may experience subzero temperatures for up to five consecutive days. Additionally, meteorologists predict that the snow line could descend to 800 meters above sea level in the far north, particularly during the early hours of Monday and Tuesday.

As Ramadan approaches, temperatures are expected to gradually rise, but residents are advised to remain prepared for continued cold conditions in the coming days.
