“South Sudan Gears Up for Peaceful Elections: A Call for Unity and International Support”

In a significant move towards fostering peace and stability in South Sudan, Vice President for the Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi, delivered a passionate appeal to the Muslim community during a recent event in Juba. The focus of his message was to rally support for the upcoming national elections and pave the way for South Sudan to transition from a turbulent past to a future characterized by peaceful governance.

Abdelbagi emphasized the urgency of the situation, with the elections slated to take place in just fifteen months. He acknowledged that South Sudan has long been plagued by a reputation for violence on the global stage. However, he firmly asserted that it was time for the country to change this narrative by ensuring that the upcoming elections are conducted in a peaceful manner.

“We need the Muslim community in the country to support the election in order for South Sudan to move from the transitional government and to have a peaceful election,” Abdelbagi urged. He underscored the significance of this moment, not only for South Sudan but also for the world to witness the nation’s commitment to peace rather than war.

Dr. Marial Benjamin, the Minister of Presidential Affairs, also echoed these sentiments during a recent address to the international community. He called for robust support as South Sudan embarks on the journey towards holding a fair and transparent election.

Marial acknowledged that the peace process had made substantial progress, but there were some unresolved issues that needed careful consideration. He stressed the importance of concluding this process with an election where the people of South Sudan could freely elect their chosen leader.

We must conclude this peace process with an election where people will elect the leader of their choice,” Marial stated, emphasizing the country’s determination to rectify past grievances through democratic means.

Furthermore, Marial pleaded for diplomatic assistance during the 78th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China in Juba. He expressed regret that South Sudan had previously descended into violence due to issues that could have been resolved through democratic dialogue.

Technical support must come from you to help us. We will do what we can as a country, but we will also need support, and we are asking for that support,” Marial implored, highlighting the nation’s need for international cooperation.

It’s worth noting that there are ongoing discussions and differences between peace partners regarding the modalities and pre-conditions for holding the elections. While the SPLM-IG believes the elections can proceed with some pending chapters unresolved, the SPLM-IO argues that this could lead to a compromised election, particularly in the absence of a permanent constitution.

As South Sudan navigates these complexities, it is crucial for all stakeholders to come together and work towards a peaceful and democratic election process. The international community’s support, as well as the unity of South Sudan’s diverse communities, will be instrumental in shaping the country’s future and dispelling the shadow of violence that has long haunted its reputation.
