Authorities are searching for a suspected burglar who reportedly stole £1,000 from a mosque in Surrey, believed to have hidden inside the building after the morning prayers concluded.

The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday, August 15, at the Redhill Jamia Mosque Al-Mustafa, located in Earlswood, Surrey.

The mosque has released an image of a suspect, which comes on the heels of similar thefts at mosques in Blackburn and Preston in recent weeks.

A spokesperson for the mosque provided details of the incident: “The suspect entered the mosque for the early morning prayers around 4:30 am. During the prayer, he concealed himself in the toilets. After the prayer ended, staff routinely check the premises to ensure everyone has left. Unfortunately, the suspect managed to evade detection.”

A representative from Surrey Police confirmed the ongoing investigation: “Officers are investigating a burglary that occurred at Redhill Jamia Mosque Al-Mustafa on Thursday, August 15. The incident took place between 6:00 am and 12:30 pm, during which two charity boxes containing money were stolen, along with a CCTV drive.”

The police are collaborating closely with the mosque and sharing information with other police forces in areas where similar mosque burglaries have been reported. The police are urging anyone with information about this incident to come forward and contact them, quoting the reference number PR/45240093336.

This incident follows a similar theft in Preston, which occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 9, at the Noor Mosque on Noor Street. CCTV footage from the mosque showed a suspect inside the building just after midnight. Mosque leaders are unsure how the suspect entered and believe he may have hidden inside until the building was empty.

A video shared by the Noor Mosque shows an emptied safe and damage to an interior door that appears to have been forcibly opened.

Earlier in the month , the Masjid E Tauheedul Islam in Blackburn reported a theft during which computer equipment and other items were stolen in the early morning hours after prayers. Video footage showed a man inside the mosque for up to 50 minutes after the daily morning prayers.

At this time, it is unclear whether these incidents are connected.
