Here is the tomb of Maryam (peace be upon her) [Mary], the mother of Isa (peace be upon him) [Jesus]. It is located in a church at the foot of the Mount of Olives, near the old city of Jerusalem.

In Islam, Maryam (peace be upon her) is revered as a righteous woman and is the only woman mentioned by name in the Qur’an. In Quran 19 Surah Maryyam, the Quran is named in her honor, and she is mentioned in the Quran more times than in the entire New Testament.

The story of Maryam (peace be upon her) in the Qur’an begins when she is still in the womb.

Mary’s mother said, “Oh my Lord! I dedicate to You, what is in my womb, for Your special service. So take it from me, for you hear and you know everything. ” [3:35].

When Mary was delivered, she said: “O my Lord! Here! I am delivered from a girl! [3:36].

She expected her child to be a boy who would grow into a scholar or religious leader. The verse goes on: “… and God knew best of what she brought forth.” And no wise man is like a woman. I called her Maryam, and I would recommend her and her offsprings to Your protection from Satan, the Rejected. ”

The Quran further mentions the qualities of Maryam (peace be upon her), declaring her (uniquely with Isa (AS) a sign of God for humanity [Quran 23:50]; as the one who “protected her chastity” [Quran66:20]; “an Obedient” [Quran66:12]; The Chosen One [Quran3:42]; “Purified One” [Quran3:42]; “Truthful” [Quran5:75]; her child conceived through the “Word of God” [Quran3:45]; and “exalted above all women of the worlds / universes” [Quran3:42].

She remained unmarried and died many years later after Isa (peace be upon him) was lifted up to heaven. Some scholars say that since unmarried women will marry in Jannah (Paradise) for the man of their choice, Maryam (peace be upon her) will marry our beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in Jannah.

The first grave was carved on the side of a hill here in the 1st century AD. By the 5th century, the upper chapel was also built. It was destroyed by the Persians in 614, restored by the Crusaders, but again destroyed by Salahuddin Ayubi in 1187. However, he left the crypt largely intact.

In the south-western wall next to the grave is a mihrab (indicating the direction of Mecca), which was installed after the conquest of Jerusalem by Salahuddin Ayyubi.
