The University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA) is set to host its highly anticipated 30th Pre-Ramadan Lecture on February 23, 2024. The annual event, themed “The Transformative Power of Ramadan,” will take place at the J.F. Ajayi Auditorium, University of Lagos, Akoka.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, UMA National President, Dr. Mumini Alao, emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, noting that it aims to shed light on the immense spiritual, personal, and communal benefits of Ramadan, encouraging Muslims to fully harness its virtues.
Renowned experts in Islamic law and human rights will headline the lecture. Prof. Mashood Baderin of the University of London, an authority in Islamic Law and International Human Rights Law, will serve as the keynote speaker. Justice Abdur-Raheem Ahmad Sayi of the Shari’ah Court of Appeal, Ilorin, Kwara State, will also deliver insights on the application and understanding of Shari’ah within Southwest Nigeria.

Prof. Baderin, who previously delivered the 14th edition of the lecture in 2008, will address the topic “Islam at the Intersection of Humanity and Religion,” exploring the balance between religious obligations and human rights. Justice Sayi, leveraging his extensive judicial expertise, will speak on “Shari’ah in Southwest Nigeria,” tackling misconceptions and historical perspectives on its implementation in the region.
Dr. Alao pointed out that recent events in Ekiti State, where a traditional ruler reportedly prohibited the establishment of a Shari’ah Arbitration Panel for willing Muslims, have sparked critical discussions. The lecture aims to address key questions: Is Shari’ah truly foreign to Southwest Nigeria? Has it played a historical role in the region’s legal framework? Do Nigerian laws permit Muslims to resolve personal matters under Shari’ah? These thought-provoking issues will be thoroughly examined by the guest speakers.
The event will also welcome distinguished personalities, including Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat; former Zamfara State Governor, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari; the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba (Prof.) Saka Matemilola; and UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who will serve as the Chief Host.
To mark the milestone 30th anniversary, UMA has introduced new features to this year’s lecture. A Qur’an Recitation Challenge will be held for students from primary, secondary, and Arabic schools, with winners announced during the event. In addition, distinguished scholars who have previously spoken at UMA lectures will be honored with special recognition awards. Attendees will also benefit from free medical check-ups provided by the UMA Medical Team before the commencement of the main program.
Dr. Alao highlighted that, over the past three decades, the UNILAG Muslim Alumni Pre-Ramadan Lecture has solidified its reputation as a leading Ramadan discourse in Lagos and across Southwest Nigeria. The event remains a cornerstone in fostering intellectual and spiritual enlightenment ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
