Why Islam frowns at public protest against leaders — Cleric

An Islamic scholar, Ustaz Faitu Sambo, has said Islam frowns at instigating protests against the leader of a country or state.

Doing such, he said, would be tantamount to causing chaos and disturbing the peace of the society.

He, however, said the best approach to correct the wrongdoings of a leader is to advise him privately or call him to order and not by staging a public protest against him.

Sambo spoke at the annual #UmmahTwitterIftar programme held in Lagos.

The programme featured lectures, recitations from the Qur’an, Islamic quiz competition, among others.

Ustaz Sambo said Muslims are enjoined to call their leaders to order in private and refrain from being “public critics or serial critics.”

He said, “When our leaders are not getting it right, the best thing is to talk to people around them.

He tasked the newly elected leaders, especially the Muslims among them, to have the good intention to serve, keep to the promises made during campaigns and strive to defend the rights of the oppressed.

In his lecture, Imam Jibril Jokomba spoke on the duty of Muslim women to their husbands and admonished them to ensure they guard their chastity and show enormous respect to them.
