The Zamfara State Government has announced a salary increase for no fewer than 11,300 Friday prayer Imams and other Islamic clerics across the state.
According to the government, the new salary structure is scheduled to take effect from January 2026, marking a significant step toward improving the welfare of religious leaders.
Governor Dauda Lawal, who disclosed this during an engagement with Islamic clerics, explained that the decision aligns with his administration’s commitment to recognizing the vital role religious leaders play in society.
He revealed that the state currently spends about ₦81.8 million monthly on the payment of salaries to Islamic clerics, including Juma’at Imams and mosque cleaners.

Governor Lawal noted that recommendations from the recently reviewed Integrated E-Payment System highlighted the need for an upward review of clerics’ salaries.
“The report of the integrated e-payment system clearly recommended a salary upgrade for you. I want to assure you that beginning from January 2026, this adjustment will be implemented to enhance your welfare and comfort,” the governor stated.
In addition to the welfare announcement, the governor called on religious leaders to intensify prayers for peace and security in the state.
He urged Imams and clerics to observe Al-Qunut, special supplications, during the five daily prayers, seeking divine intervention to address the lingering security challenges.
“I encourage you to include special prayers in your daily worship, asking Allah to expose and bring to justice anyone contributing to the problem of banditry in Zamfara, whether directly or indirectly,” Governor Lawal appealed.
The move has been widely viewed as a morale booster for Islamic clerics and a demonstration of the state government’s resolve to strengthen collaboration with religious institutions in promoting peace and stability.
