Brighton Appoints First Muslim Deputy Mayor

In a historic moment for the city of Brighton & Hove, Councilor Mohammed Asaduzzaman was appointed as the Deputy Mayor, making history as the city’s first Muslim in a mayoral role.

“I am pleased and proud to have been asked to be Deputy Mayor of our wonderful city. I feel it is recognition of my passion for promoting tolerance, diversity and inclusiveness in Brighton & Hove,” said Councilor Asaduzzaman, Brighton Council website reported.

“As deputy mayor, and later mayor, I will continue to be involved in and organize multicultural activities to which everyone is welcome.

“I was a founder member of Brighton & Hove Multicultural Group, which promotes diversity, equality, inclusion and social cohesion through events and hospitality.

“This has included social events, helping to commemorate local people with Blue Plaques and remembering those who lost their lives in WW1 with an annual commemoration at The Chattri Monument.”

Born in Bangladesh, Councillor Asaduzzaman used to work with the State Minister for Irrigation and Water Development.

Success Story

Moving to Britain in 1995, he became involved with many charities and cultural organizations across the city and was well known in the community during the past 27 years.

Currently, he serves as the councilor in Hollingdean and Fiveways.

His contribution to the community has been recognized with many awards including a Home Office Respect Award, a Letter of Thanks from 10 Downing Street and an invitation to visit Buckingham Palace.

“I am very much looking forward to supporting our new Mayor, Councilor Jackie O’Quinn, with her official duties this year and to taking up my role as Mayor next year. It is an honor to have been chosen to represent this inclusive and tolerant city,” he said.

Many Muslims have achieved new political milestones recently in England.

In Bolton, Councilor Mohammed Ayub became the new mayor after an inauguration at the town hall on Wednesday.

Last month, Councilor Yasmine Dar was elected as the first female, Muslim, Asian Lord Mayor of Manchester, in a groundbreaking accomplishment that highlights diversity and progress.
