Renowned for his teachings on the importance of education, interfaith, and intercultural dialogue, Gülen inspired millions in Turkey and around the world. However, he faced serious accusations from the Turkish government, which alleged that he orchestrated the failed coup attempt in July 2016. Gülen consistently denied any involvement in the coup.

For over a decade, Gülen’s followers both in Turkey and abroad have been the targets of a significant government crackdown, particularly intensifying after the coup attempt.

Gülen had resided in the United States since 1999.
