Armed Men Arrested After Incident at Manchester Mosque During Ramadan

Police have launched a major investigation after two men were reported to have entered Manchester Central Mosque during Ramadan evening prayers, allegedly carrying weapons.

The incident took place at the mosque on Upper Park Road in Victoria Park at approximately 8:30pm on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, during Taraweeh prayers. According to mosque officials and eyewitness accounts, the two men arrived carrying bags that raised immediate suspicion among volunteers.

Suspicious Activity During Taraweeh Prayers

Volunteers at the mosque reported that one of the men was carrying a large bag, which was later believed to contain an axe. The second individual was reportedly found with additional items, including a hammer and a knife.

Police Investigation Ongoing

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police stated that officers were called to reports of two men acting suspiciously inside the mosque at around 8:40pm.

The arrested individual is currently in custody on suspicion of carrying an offensive weapon and possession of Class B drugs. Police are continuing their efforts to locate the second suspect and have increased patrols in the surrounding area as a precaution.

Superintendent Simon Nasim of the City of Manchester Central district addressed the situation, confirming swift police action and reassuring the public that community safety remains a priority.

He emphasized that there is no place for weapons in the community and reaffirmed the force’s commitment to ensuring that all residents can worship and go about their daily activities without fear.

Mosque Statement and Community Concerns

In an official statement, Manchester Central Mosque described the event as a “serious security incident” during the blessed month of Ramadan.

The mosque confirmed that volunteers identified a suspicious bag containing an axe that had been placed inside the main hall. All relevant CCTV footage and information have been handed over to the police to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Mosque officials also highlighted growing concerns about increased hostility and threats faced by Muslim communities across the UK in recent years. They described the rise in Islamophobic incidents as deeply troubling and called for greater protection and resources to address these risks.

Safety Advice for Worshippers

In response to the incident, mosque authorities have advised congregants to:

  • Travel in groups where possible

  • Remain vigilant when attending prayers

  • Avoid leaving children unattended

Additional police patrols will remain visible in the area while investigations continue.
