Burna Boy Opens Up: “I Converted from Christianity to Islam While Searching for the Truth”

Nigerian Grammy-winning musician Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has spoken candidly about his spiritual journey and his search for deeper truth beyond religion.

During a recent interview with Plaqueboymax, the Afrobeats icon revealed that although he was raised in a Christian household, he later converted to Islam in his quest for understanding and connection with the divine.

Burna Boy explained that his religious upbringing was largely influenced by his parents and the environment he grew up in. However, as he matured, curiosity and a desire for personal understanding led him to explore other faiths.

“Religion is a controlled mechanism,” he said. “In all my research, there’s always one scientific fact that challenges what’s written in every holy book. Everything seems to originate from the workshop of the sun.”

Despite his extensive exploration of various beliefs, Burna Boy confessed that his spiritual journey has left him with more questions than answers.

“I’m very spiritual. I believe we are creations — and if we are creations, there must be a creator,” he shared. “Everyone presents their own version of the truth, and that’s what makes it so confusing. I grew up Christian, converted to Islam, and studied different doctrines, but I’m still searching for what’s really real.”

The artist admitted that the deeper he delved into religious studies, the more uncertain he became.

“The more I researched, the more confused I got,” he added. “But one thing I’m sure of is that there’s a higher power protecting me. I feel that connection whenever I pray, and that’s what gives me peace.”

Through his reflections, Burna Boy highlighted the universal struggle of understanding faith and the spiritual quest many people face — one that transcends religion and dogma, focusing instead on personal experience and connection to the divine.
