Eid al-Adha 2025: FG Declares June 6 and 9 as Public Holidays

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially designated Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9, 2025, as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid al-Adha, also known locally as Eid-el-Kabir or Big Sallah.

This announcement was made on Monday, June 2, by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through an official statement released by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.

In his message, the Minister extended heartfelt greetings to Muslims across Nigeria and around the world, urging them to embrace the core values of the occasion — faith, sacrifice, obedience, and compassion. He emphasized the spiritual essence of Eid al-Adha, encouraging the Muslim faithful to reflect on the unwavering devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was prepared to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.

Eid al-Adha is one of the two major Islamic festivals celebrated globally. It honors the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to submit to Allah’s will, and it reminds believers of the virtues of selflessness and total surrender to divine instruction.

As Nigerians prepare for this important religious observance, the government encourages citizens to use this period for prayer, unity, and acts of kindness, while fostering peace and national development.
