[Q-ID0807] If I missed the two Sunnahs of Fajr, do I have to make them up?

QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: When should the missed sunnah prayer of Fajr be offered when the fard is offered (on time)? Is it necessary to offer it? Can it be offered after the fard prayer, in Fajr time?

Questioner: Brother from UK

ANSWER:

الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

If the sunnah prayer of Fajr is missed and the fard [obligatory] has been offered, then making up for the missed sunnah prayer is not necessary. According to Imam Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with him), it is better to offer the missed sunnah prayer of Fajr after the sun has risen. It is unanimously impermissible to offer it after the fard prayer, before sunrise, i.e. in Fajr time.

Fatawa Hindiyyah states:

“وَإِذَا فَاتَتَا بِدُونِ الْفَرْضِ لَا يُقْضَى عِنْدَهُمَا خِلَافًا لِمُحَمَّدٍ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى”

Translation: “If they are missed except for the fard, then they are not to be made up for, according to the two shaykhs. This is contrary to the opinion of Imam Muhammad (may Allah have mercy upon him).”

[Fatawa Hindiyyah, vol. 1, pg. 112]

It is impermissible to offer the sunnah prayer after the fard prayer, before sunrise. The Prophet ﷺ forbade praying after Fajr until the sun rises.

“نَهَى عَنِ الصَّلاَةِ بَعْدَ الفَجْرِ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ”

[Sahih al-Bukhari, hadith 183]
