[Q-ID0848] If the Fajr congregation has started, should I join or pray the 2 Sunnahs first?

QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: How is it to pray the two Sunnahs of Fajr whilst the Jamā’ah of Fajr is taking place as I have seen many people doing this? If a person left the two Sunnahs of Fajr in order to catch the congregation is it necessary for him to make them up later?

Questioner: Mubin from Luton

ANSWER:

It is not permitted to pray any nafl prayer after the jamā’at (congregation) has been initiated.  However, the two Sunnah rak’ats of Fajr will certainly be prayed as long as one is certain that he will catch the congregation.

Just as his been mentioned in Bahār-e-Sharī’at

“It is not permitted to begin any nafl prayer after the jamā’at (congregation) has been established except for the two Sunnahs of Fajr, if one knows that after offering them one will catch the jamā’ah even if one were to join in the final sitting. Such a person should offer the two Sunnahs but it is not allowed for him to offer them in the same row as the congregation rather he should offer them at home or outside the Masjid if there is a place suitable for prayer there.

[Bahār-e-Sharī’at Volume 1 Part 4 page 665]

If one has already offered the two fards of Fajr then one should offer the two Sunnahs of Fajr about twenty minutes after sunrise.  It is better to do so but not necessary as there is no qadā (make-up) for Sunnah prayers.

Just as is mentioned in Bahār-e-Sharī’at:

“If the Sunnahs of Fajr have been missed and the Fard has been prayed then there is no make-up of the Sunnahs , however Imām Muhammad (may Allah shower him with mercy) states it is better if one prayed them after the sun has risen, and prior to sunrise it is forbidden by agreement.”
