Ottawa, Nova Scotia Allow Adhan in Ramadan to Support Muslims

In Ramadan Muslims spend their time in prayer, self-reflection and fasting from sunrise to sunset.

But COVID-19 pandemic has somehow made Ramadan somehow difficult for Muslims due to social distancing and mosque closures.

In a show of solidarity with the Muslim community, many cities in Canada have allowed mosques to make the adhan (call to prayer) through loudspeakers at sunset during the month of Ramadan.

These videos show adhan performed on April 30 at different Ottawa mosques.

Nova Scotia took a similar decision, allowing Muslims to broadcast adhan at sunset during Ramadan.

“This is a show of unity and solidarity that HRM will overcome these problems and difficult times together,” the Ummah Masjid and Community Center said in a statement.

A week ago, Dar Al Hijrah Mosque in Minneapolis made adhan publicly first time ever.

The state allowed the adhan to be broadcast five times a day during the month of Ramadan to provide the city’s Muslim minority a sense of normalcy.

The adhan is the call to announce that it is time for a particular obligatory Salah (ritual prayer).

Last February, Muslims in Paterson, New Jersey, were allowed to recite the Adhan publicly thanks to a new ordinance.
