The Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque, extensively damaged during nearly three decades of Armenian occupation, has been meticulously restored to its historical splendor, according to Trend reports.
This mosque, a significant architectural and historical landmark, was originally designed in the 19th century by the renowned architect Karbalai Safikhan Garabaghi. It holds the distinction of being the first mosque constructed in Shusha by Govhar Agha, the daughter of Ibrahim Khan.
Shusha, a city with a rich historical tapestry, was traditionally divided into 17 upper and lower quarters. The Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque, named for its location in the lower part of the city, stands out with its unique architectural features. To enhance the mosque’s grandeur and vertical prominence, the architect strategically placed minarets on the rear facade.

Throughout the period of occupation, the mosque and its minarets suffered significant damage. The structure was repeatedly targeted and heavily damaged by Armenian armored vehicles, turning this historic edifice into a symbol of resilience and the destructive impact of conflict.
The restoration of the Ashaghi Govhar Agha Mosque is not just a revival of a building but a reclamation of cultural heritage, bringing back a vital piece of Shusha’s historical identity.
