A disturbing incident at the Belfast Islamic Centre on Friday night has prompted a major hate crime and terrorism investigation after a viable explosive device was hurled through a window during evening prayers.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) responded to an emergency call at approximately 10:10 p.m. following reports of a suspicious object at the Centre on University Road, South Belfast. A 34-year-old man was arrested under the Terrorism Act and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Police confirmed the device was viable and has since been removed for forensic testing. Assistant Chief Constable Anthony McNally emphasized that although the suspect was detained under anti-terror legislation, the motive remains under active investigation. Authorities are exploring several leads, including the possibility of a religiously-motivated hate crime.
“Our serious crime branch detectives are working swiftly to establish the full circumstances. We are not currently seeking any additional suspects,” McNally stated.
Political Leaders Condemn the Attack
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from political figures across Northern Ireland, who described the attack as an affront to the region’s values of diversity and coexistence.

Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn labeled the attack “shameful,” adding,
“Hatred of this kind has no place in Northern Ireland. I urge anyone with information to assist the PSNI in their investigation.”
Paula Bradshaw, Alliance MLA for South Belfast, said the attack is not reflective of the community’s spirit:
“This was a deliberate attempt to spread fear among worshippers. But the courage shown by a passer-by and the rapid police response better reflect the true character of Belfast – one that embraces diversity.”
Sinn Féin MLA Deirdre Hargey also condemned the incident:
“No one should feel endangered in their place of worship. Such hateful acts divide us and must be rejected by all political voices.”
Green Party Councillor Aine Groogan called the incident a “cowardly and vicious act,” expressing horror at the thought of what could have unfolded.
“We are thankful for the bystander’s brave intervention. It’s a stark reminder of the rising tide of racist hate and violence. All of us must confront racism, misinformation, and bigotry head-on.”
Groogan also criticized rhetoric that fuels hostility against migrants and religious minorities, calling for reflection among leaders who spread divisive narratives.
Community Resilience and Ongoing Investigation
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, but the emotional toll on worshippers and the wider Islamic community is considerable. Community leaders and organizations have since expressed solidarity and called for unity in the wake of the attack.
