It is believed that this place is not far from the current Masah is the approximate location of the house of Abu Jahal. Abu Jahal was a relative of the Prophet (ﷺ) and one of the worst enemies of Islam. He was described by the Prophet (ﷺ) as the “Pharaoh” of this Ummah.

The actual name of Abu Jahal was Amr ibn Hisham, but he was widely known as Abu Hakam (“Father of Wisdom”) among Quraysh, because he was considered a wise man. His relentless hostility and militancy towards Islam brought him the name Abu Jahal (father of ignorance) among Muslims. He was a member of the Banu Makhzum of the Quraysh clan.

Abu Jahal was not the real uncle of the Prophet (ﷺ) [not the real brother of his father], but a cousin of his father. He was a staunch polytheist and disliked the Prophet (ﷺ) very much , using every opportunity to reproach him and publicly humiliate him.

He was one of the greatest pursuers of the Muslims. When a Muslim convert was discovered among the tribe’s hierarchy, Abu Jahal reprimanded the convert and then ridiculed him in front of his fellow tribesmen to lose their respect. When he discovered that the trader had converted to Islam, he gave instructions that no one should do business with him. As a result, the convert trader was unable to sell his goods and became impoverished.

To convert slaves belonging to polytheism Quraysh, received the most severe punishment. Abu Jahal beat Harithan bint al-Muammil (may Allah be pleased with her), one of such slaves, for her conversion to Islam such an extent that she lost her sight. He attacked Sumayu bint Khayyah, Ammar’s mother (may Allah be pleased with him), and inflicted mortal wounds on her, stabbing her in her private part. This blessed woman was the first to be martyred in the cause of Islam.

When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, he was determined to announce his new faith to the enemies of the Prophet (ﷺ), and the first place he went was Abu Jahal’s home. Umar (RA) knocked on Abu Jahal door, He came out and greeted him: “Welcome! What brought you here?”

“I came to tell you that I accepted the religion of Allah and His Messenger Muhammad,” Umar said calmly.

Abu Jahal heard this and said with disgust: “May God destroy you and what you brought!” And he closed the door.
