This is the maqam of Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the most famous Companions of the Prophet (saw) and a wonderful example of a seeker of truth. He marks the place where he once stopped, and is located on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
Salman Farsi (may Allah be pleased with him) grew up in Isfahan in Persia into a very rich and respectable family. Initially, he was an adherent of the religion of magians (fire worshipers). One day his father sent him to the village. On the way, he passed by the church, from which he heard Christians pray. He was surprised and remarked to himself: “This is better than our religion.” He asked the Christians about the origin of their faith and was told that it was in ash-Sham (Great Syria). Upon his return, he told his experience to his father, who was upset and imprisoned him in a house.
He managed to escape and join the caravan in Syria, where he sought out the leading bishop, became a Christian, and entered the service in the church. However, he discovered that the bishop was corrupt and exposed his actions after the death of the bishop. The bishop was replaced by a pious man who was very devoted to worship day and night. After his death, Salman joined various Christian religious figures in Mosul, Nisibis, and other places. The last bishop told him about the appearance of the Prophet in the land of the Arabs, who will have a reputation for strict honesty, one who will accept the gift, but will never consume charity (sadaqah) for himself. He would also have a seal of the Prophets on his back.
Salman paid the money to join the group of Arabs back to his homeland, but he was betrayed by them and sold into slavery to a Jew, who, in turn, sold him again to another Jew from the Banu Quraiz tribe. He was taken to Yatrib (Medina), where he learned where the expected prophet would come. There he was planted, grown and cared for palm trees.
One day, Salman was sitting on the top of a palm tree when he heard someone telling his master about emigration from Mecca of a man who claimed to be a prophet. Salman was excited about this news and asked his master to tell him more, but his master hit him hard and told him to go back to work.
That evening, Salman took a few dates and went to Cuba, where the Prophet (saw) stopped, and offered dates as charity (sadaqah). The Prophet ordered his companions to eat, but he did not eat. Salman collected some more dates, and when the Prophet (saw) left Cuba for Medina, he approached him and said: “I noticed that you did not eat the sadaqah I gave. This, however, is a gift for you. ” From this gift of dates they ate both he and his companions.
Salman left and returned shortly after he found the Prophet (saw) in Al-Baqi. He greeted him and turned to see his back. The Prophet (saw), knowing what he wanted, threw his clothes over his shoulder, and Salman saw the seal of the Prophets, exactly as it was described to him.
Salman kissed him and converted to Islam.
