Saudi Arabia: Four Perish as Car Swept Away by Floodwaters Near Mecca

A devastating incident near Mecca claimed the lives of four friends after their vehicle was engulfed by floodwaters caused by torrential rains in the area. The tragedy has been confirmed by the victims’ relatives.

The unfortunate event occurred shortly after the friends had performed the Maghrib (sunset) prayers and set out in their vehicle, heading toward a rest house, according to Abdullah Al Zahrani, a family member.

While driving through Wadi Arna, south of Mecca, they encountered sudden flooding. Despite believing they could navigate through the water, the rapidly rising waves submerged their car, ultimately sweeping it away.

“We must heed the warnings issued by the Meteorology Centre,” Al Zahrani urged during an interview with Al Arabiya TV. “Even a seemingly small amount of water can turn deadly. Caution is essential, especially in regions like Mecca, which are surrounded by valleys prone to flooding.”

In recent days, several parts of Saudi Arabia, including Mecca, Jeddah, and Medina, have experienced heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to issue alerts and ramp up emergency measures. Videos circulating on social media revealed flooded roads and vehicles stranded due to the extreme weather.

The Saudi General Directorate of Civil Defence has emphasized the need for heightened vigilance, warning that thunderstorms are expected to persist across the kingdom until Sunday.

Residents have been advised to stay indoors during rainfall and avoid flood-prone areas, especially wadis. According to the Civil Defence, the Mecca region is anticipated to experience moderate to heavy rains, with potential for flooding, hail, and dust storms.

Other regions forecasted to face similar weather conditions include Al Baha, Asir, Jazan, the Eastern Province, Tabuk, Al Jawf, the Northern Borders, Hail, Medina, Al Qassim, and Riyadh.

Local authorities continue to urge the public to remain cautious, adhere to safety guidelines, and stay informed through official weather updates.
