Birmingham Mosques Present Urgent Demands to PM Starmer Amid Iran-Israel Conflict

A coalition of 15 mosques across Birmingham has issued a strong and united message to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, expressing grave concern over potential British involvement in the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. The open letter—signed by respected institutions including Green Lane Masjid, As-Suffa Trust, and the Abrahamic Foundation—urges the UK government to lead with diplomacy, not military aggression.

Their appeal follows intensified regional conflict and growing fears that the UK may support or participate in actions that could further destabilize the Middle East. The letter calls on the Prime Minister to adopt a policy rooted in peace, law, and consistency.

This public statement was sparked by international developments, including aggressive military action and inflammatory rhetoric, which threaten to expand the scope of violence across the region. The mosques assert that any UK involvement—direct or indirect—would be “legally questionable, morally indefensible, and dangerously reckless.”

“To do so would only deepen the cycle of violence in the Middle East and risk compromising the safety and security of British citizens at home and abroad,” the letter warns.

Four Key Demands to the UK Government

The letter outlines four specific demands directed at the Prime Minister:

  1. Reject Any UK Military Involvement
Categorically oppose any form of British participation—military, logistical, or intelligence—in the Israel-Iran conflict.

  2. Uphold International Law
Condemn violations of international norms and ensure the UK does not become complicit in unlawful warfare.

  3. Prioritize De-escalation and Diplomacy
Collaborate with global partners to prevent further bloodshed and promote peaceful negotiations.

  4. Ensure Consistency in Foreign Policy
Apply uniform legal and ethical standards in dealings with all nations, regardless of alliance.

“The British public is war-weary,” the statement continues, emphasizing the nation’s growing disapproval of endless foreign military entanglements, especially in the volatile Middle East.

The signatories represent a broad cross-section of Birmingham’s Muslim community, including institutions deeply engaged in local and interfaith outreach. Their joint message calls on the UK to uphold its responsibilities as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council—using its influence to calm tensions rather than escalate them.
