Landmark Court Ruling Celebrated as Victory for Inclusive Islam and Legal Accountability – SIS

Sisters in Islam (SIS) has applauded the recent Federal Court ruling, calling it a crucial milestone not only for their organization but for all Malaysians who value justice, transparency, and an inclusive interpretation of Islam.

In a statement issued following the decision, SIS emphasized that the court’s recognition of the importance of judicial oversight in matters involving religious edicts (fatwas) reinforces the foundational principles of democracy and the rule of law.

“This verdict isn’t merely a win for SIS,” the organization noted. “It’s a statement that fatwas—while significant religious tools—are not immune from legal review. It affirms that every Malaysian, regardless of faith or belief, has the right to challenge decisions that may impact their fundamental liberties.”

The ruling is expected to set a precedent in ensuring religious authorities remain accountable within the framework of Malaysia’s legal system. Legal experts and civil society advocates have also praised the judgment, describing it as a positive step toward a more inclusive and rights-based approach to the application of Islamic jurisprudence.
