In a remarkable display of religious harmony, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, made history by organizing the first-ever Ramadan lecture by an Olubadan. The event, held at the Olubadan’s Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan, brought together a diverse audience, underscoring the unity and peaceful coexistence among different faiths in the region.
The significance of the occasion was amplified by the fact that the Olubadan, a Christian, took the bold step of hosting an Islamic event, further reinforcing Ibadanland’s reputation for religious tolerance. Attendees included members of the Olubadan-in-Council, esteemed royal fathers, distinguished dignitaries, Islamic clerics, and representatives of various Islamic sects, all joining in prayers and reflections during the holy month of Ramadan.
A Unifying Moment for Ibadanland
Addressing the gathering, Oba Olakulehin expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming turnout at the historic event. He emphasized that despite religious differences, Ibadan remains a city where unity prevails over division.
“As a traditional ruler, I am the father of all, regardless of religion, tribe, or background. This gathering is a testament to the peaceful coexistence that has always defined Ibadanland. It is well known that most families in this city have members of different religious beliefs, yet they live harmoniously under one roof. This is the essence of true tolerance and unity,” he said.
Echoing the monarch’s sentiments, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, highlighted the secular nature of Ibadan and Oyo State. He noted that the massive participation in the Ramadan lecture reaffirmed that the region upholds freedom of worship and religious inclusivity.
This event serves as a reminder that in Ibadan, people practice their faith without fear of persecution or discrimination. The principles of love, patience, and kindness, which are the essence of all religions, should continue to guide us in our daily lives,” Oba Ladoja stated.

The highlight of the event was the lecture delivered by the guest speaker, Khalifa Ajisafe Akilapa, who spoke on the theme “Destiny”. He defined destiny as God’s divine decision, emphasizing that every leader, including the Olubadan, ascends their position through divine will.

“It is destiny that brought Oba Olakulehin to the revered throne of his ancestors, just as destiny determines the path of everyone in leadership positions,” the scholar remarked.
He urged those in power, including traditional titleholders, to embrace humility, practice forgiveness, and uphold integrity in their leadership. He also encouraged citizens to remain loyal to constituted authorities, fulfill their responsibilities with sincerity, and seek divine guidance in all affairs.
