Religious, Traditional Leaders Urged to Condemn Youths’ Desperate Quest for Wealth

Religious and traditional leaders have been urged to intensify awareness campaigns against the growing obsession with quick wealth, particularly among young people.

The appeal was made by the Amir of the Companions, Ilorin District, Ismail Okunlola, in a statement issued on Friday in Ilorin.

Expressing deep concern over the recent gruesome murder of Hafsoh Lawal, a final-year student at the College of Education, Ilorin, Okunlola strongly condemned the act, which was allegedly carried out by a self-proclaimed Islamic cleric, Abdulrahman Bello.

He emphasized the urgent need to restore core family values and strengthen community ties to address the increasing moral decline in society.

We must revive the spirit of communal responsibility, where neighbors actively participate in correcting and guiding young people toward the right path,” he stated.

Okunlola also cautioned against the growing desperation among youths to acquire wealth through illicit means. He stressed that parents must take full responsibility for instilling strong moral values in their children from an early age.

Additionally, he urged government authorities to ensure swift enforcement of justice, particularly in cases involving murder.

Once a competent court delivers a judgment, governors must promptly sign execution orders to deter others from committing similar crimes,” he added.

The Islamic scholar further advocated for a review of the curriculum in Arabic and Islamic schools, with periodic training for teachers and scholars to enhance supervision and moral guidance.

Proper monitoring of students‘ education, with active parental involvement, is essential to prevent young minds from being influenced by harmful ideologies,” he noted.

Finally, he appealed to Nigerian youths to avoid criminal activities that could jeopardize their future or bring shame to their families.
