Saudi Arabia Temporarily Shuts Mama Noura Restaurant in Al Khobar After Food Poisoning Cases

Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia – Authorities in Saudi Arabia have ordered the temporary closure of the popular restaurant chain Mama Noura in Al Khobar following confirmed reports of food poisoning among several customers, according to local media.

The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and Housing enforced the shutdown for 30 days, citing multiple violations. These included poor food quality, improper storage conditions, and failure to comply with staff hygiene standards.

Officials confirmed that all patients affected by the incident are now in stable condition. Specialized inspection teams remain on-site to review food handling practices and ensure compliance with health and safety protocols.

The closure comes at a time when municipal inspections have intensified across the Eastern Province, where high summer temperatures and humidity increase the risks of food contamination.

Authorities highlighted that the purpose of such inspection campaigns is not only punitive but also educational—reminding restaurant operators to source ingredients only from approved suppliers and to strictly follow hygiene and food safety measures.

Health experts warned that items like shawarma and fresh salads pose higher risks in extreme heat if not stored properly. They emphasized that leaving shawarma outside refrigeration for more than two hours creates a breeding ground for bacteria such as Salmonella.

Mama Noura, a household name in Saudi Arabia’s dining scene, operates several branches across the Kingdom and is widely known for its shawarma, sandwiches, and signature pies. Its temporary closure has drawn public attention, given the restaurant’s popularity among residents and visitors alike.
